A long time ago, a monster named Nian terrorised and stole children from villages on New Year’s Eve. Soon, villagers discovered the creature was terrified of the colour red and loud noises, so they decorated their houses in red, played with firecrackers, and gave out red pockets as protection. United, they successfully drove away the monster, and it was never seen again. These traditions became an important part of the Chinese identity, which they are passed down through generations and practised in modern days.
